New Advanced Driver Course - 6th August 2026

 

We will be at the Lostock Parish Centre, Tempest Road, Lostock, BL6 4EL at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm start.  If you know of someone interested in joining our happy band, why not give their contact details to Katherine Whittle (01204 848449) so that she can send them an information pack.  The course fee is just £204 and includes all practical on the road guidance, books, membership fees and test fee

Group Meeting – Our Guest Speaker will be Brian Topping, with a talk entitled “Tales of a Customs Officer”.

 

Brian left Scotland in the early 1970s as a fresh faced teenager to take up a job as a Customs Officer at Heathrow Airport.  His career as a civil servant spans almost 40 years and he has worked in a number of departments (primarily HM Customs and Excise) including retiring from the Cabinet Office.  His work has been widely varied and he has been involved in delivering key government projects.  

 

Brian last spoke to us at the April 2025 Group Meeting.  He continues his "Tales of a Customs Officer" talks and in Part 2, he will draw from his and other officers' experiences at Heathrow Airport during the 1970s, 80s and 90s.  He will guide you through the background and history of drug smuggling, provide examples of detections and investigations; the skill of officers in maintaining this success and some amusing anecdotes when things didn't go quite right for the smugglers.  

 

He will present this talk in his usual light-hearted way but never depart from the seriousness of the work he and his colleagues undertook.

 

Meet at Lostock Parish Centre.  Group meetings are open to all, please arrive by 7.15pm so that you have time to get organised and take your seat ready for a 7.30pm start.

 

Associates "Meet the Examiner" Evening

 

 

If you are an Associate, then we expect you to attend as this evening forms part of your course.  The evening has been arranged so that the Examiner can tell you what he will be looking for on your test and to give you an opportunity to ask him any questions you may have about the test or driving in general.  If you are unable to attend please let your Mentor know.  We will be at Lostock Parish Centre, Tempest Road, Lostock, Bolton, BL6 4EL, please arrive by 7.15pm ready for a 7.30 pm start and the session will end at approx 10.00pm.
